Billy or Bilic favourites

Pardew best for getting us within minutes of lifting the cup.

I can't have Moyes at the moment and cant have Harry under any circumstances.

None of the our managers have been poached by other clubs I note.

I seem to remember Sir Trevor played 433 because he didn't have any real wide men so players in the right positions. So simple when you think about it.

had some great days/nights under Bagpuss, but some questionable transfers & managing the north london vermin soured things for me. for a single season, which encapsulated everything I like in a manager, it has to be Bilic and that last season at the Boleyn. zero respect of fear of opposing teams, and it was exciting all the way up to that last game. honourable mention to Pardew, who also got it/us and was a very positive manager.

slav for me, before the wheels promptly fell off. don't give a toss if it was all payet, some magic pixie dust in the air because it was our final season or just a new manager bounce, i fucking loved that season.

Had great times under Billy, Harry. Pardew and Slav. All tried to play the right way. I always wonder if the two Argentines and spend friendly board had never happened Pards may have got something going in time, del a bit sorry for him that he was never Eggerts man.

I read somewhere that we are now looking for a head coach to work with Tim rather than a manager and I wonder if Heitinga fits into that bill.

Pards, Biliic and Harry, though Harry's term is soured by accepting a bung for the selling of Rio, which started the mass exodus of the most talented group of players that we ever have had since the 60s.

Won a few hundred quid on Pards after getting tipped off by Amocs on here that it was a done deal that we'd nicked him from Reading.

If he could have kept his cock in his pants he could have had a much better career than he's ended up having.

Yeah, has to be Pards or Harry (despite the discomfort that now causes). Good, attacking football, Upton Park, but of a punk attitude where we just went got it against top sides, full houses, some riotous nights under the floodlights, trips to Cardiff and a cup final.

Plus the always memorable trip to Palermo, where I took a bottle on the nut.

Pards was the architect of his own downfall, for legal reasons I still can’t explain on here (unfortunately). But we had done good times during that period. Harry, too.

We shouldn’t kid ourselves, though: we did also watch some utter shite under both men - as we did with Roeder, Curbs, Zola, Grant (worst of the bunch), Sam, Slav and that bloke who escaped from the care home.

Watching West Ham has always been a glorious, dangerous and uniquely disappointing experience. Long may it continue!

The final season at UP will live long, too: Slav deserves credit for that, and Payet was a fucking genius before he went all toy-throwing.

But I can never look beyond Lyall as a fan. I was too young to attend under Greenwood. But he and Lyall set club standards and tones that will rarely, if ever, be matched. Few hiccups, of course. But that’s our club history, innit?

Difficult to argue the years with Di Canio et al under Redknapp weren’t entertaining. I loved that period but I think football in general was just a better experience then.

In modern times, Bilic, clearly. Yeh we suffered some shit defeats. Swansea 4-1 at home which should have been the last game at the Boleyn for example, but that year we respected nobody and went toe to toe with all. That’s all we ask I think. That season encapsulated the West Ham way. Beat Liverpool and Arsenal away either side of losing to Leicester and Bournemouth at home, but at least it was entertaining.

Why?

The first two it felt like had a real affinity to the club and the club's ethos, but also brought with them a hope that things could be better and that we had a right to compete against anyone.

Brooking was simply a legend in the hotseat, was impossible to see him put a foot wrong, and frankly after the dismal Roeder and his ego of control to push Di Canio out, Brooking came in and made the right footballing decisions, with instant respect from those around him. Pure calm reassurance no one could fail to get behind.

Pellegrini was the dawn of hope and a new era, and his focus on 'we should be a big club and see ourselves in that light', while ultimately failed, is exactly the perspective and culture change the club needs.

Zola for the same reasons as Pellegrini to a lesser extent...it felt like a new era of the club trying to do things the right way...a development project to take us forward with a young manager with their best years ahead of them, a recruitment model that looked to the future. Again that it didn't work was by the by (and it still could have, given Zola did keep us up, and who knows what might have been if he'd been kept on instead of Grant).

Bonds was early in my West Ham supporting days...I have vague memories of Macari and even more vague memories of Lyall as a young school boy, but Bonds was the era when I was seeing the games on TV, and following it week in week out. He had a respect from the club that was hard to argue with a team that whilst not the most talented I felt epitomised the spirit of hard work and graft that should be the bare minimum, and could be proud of their efforts.

Moyes has obviously been the most successful period in my West Ham supporting history , and I've enjoyed the individual results, but the football has always felt somewhat lacking. We win inspite of performances more often than not, and it's the results that have been joyous at times, rather than enjoyment of the performances in getting there. No one can deny the joy of the Euro Conf win, or the joy of seeing us at the right end of the table, but the magic of the games themselves is just not how it was under Redknapp....with his focus on flair players expressing themselves. Paqueta is the only shining light, with a supporting cast of Kudus and Bowen of course, and it was great to see Rice evolve, but Moyes somehow takes what could be shiny and bright, and just tarnishes it.

Pardew again felt like a bit of a fan running the show. Some great occasions all be it not at the top table, over achievement with the group we had, and his bluster and general attitude that we shouldn't see ourselves as underdogs but go toe to toe is what the club is about for me.

Curbishley obviously performed a miracle, but for me it was less about him, and more about Tevez and Noble. The great escape season. He lacked charisma, but had the sense to put the right pieces in the right places.

Allardyce had moments and again we had some occasions that galvanised things, and players I loved to see like Diafra Sakho, Enner Valencia, and Alex Song. But he simply didn't get the club and so he took something that should have been shiny at times, and tarnished it. But he got us back up and thanks to him for that.

Roeder and Grant....less said about them the better.

The level of stupidity on here reaches new levels.

The only manager to win anything since Lyall is Moyes.

The only manager in our history to get us into Europe 3 years running is Moyes.

Lyall was a fabulous manager but he did serve up some dross at times, if WHO had been around during his reign he would have been hounded out after the first relegation.

As far as I'm concerned Greenwood is No 1 followed by Moyes and then Lyall.

The other ones are all much of a muchness but I did have a fondness for Bilic so he can go into 4th place.

context is everything.

Moyes got into Europe for finishing 7th.
Moyes has been lucky to manage a team which has amongst the highest investment in Europe.


Redknapp finished 8th, 5th and 9th with much less and investment.
